Meet the finalists! Shaena Cohen

We show histories from all around the world from people who shared their efforts for free knowledge in the previous edition. Let’s meet them!

Today we present Shaena Cohen from Ireland, whose image of “The fire within her” arrived to a runner-up position in the “People in Science” category.

I’m a irish secondary school student heading into my 6th and final year of education. I’ve been photographing all my schools events for as long as I can remember and it was here that my passion for photography came to light. With my keen and precise eye pointed out by my mentor and vice principal I was encouraged to keep it up and even entered a few competitions, bringing back both nations and international titles! Attending a country school I am constantly inspired by the nature around me along with the wide variety of subjects studied in my school, The science lab always promises exciting and intriguing shoots.

My photo ‘The Fire Within Her’ is a work of which I am very proud. I hope this photo can show and inspire young girls and women that there is fire inside us all and encourage them to see that science is an important part of life as it takes the world forward, It cares for the generations after us, our children and our grandchildren. It has brought us the modern technology to record, cherish and share these moments today, It is the reason you’re reading this right now!

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood.
Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” – Marie Curie

I hope my work and words will stay with people as I feel women standing together is so important. I know these words will follow through in my photography and now all I can do is hope people will enjoy my work and take away from it what they need.
